Announcements:

Join us tonight at 7 p.m. at the Delran Municipal Building located at 900 Chester Avenue in Delran NJ and learn about this interesting part of architectural history.

Did you buy your home from the SEARS ROEBUCK CATALOG?

Do you remember as a child the thrill of seeing the Sears Roebuck & Co. Wishbook Catalog come in the mail a few months before Christmas? It was a textbook of toys! A gospel of gifts! We bought everything from the Sears Roebuck catalog. Even….houses!

From 1908 to 1942, Sears sold more than 70,000 of build your own house kits in North America. “Sears Modern Homes” were purchased primarily by customers in the East Coast and Midwest states. New Jersey’s Burlington and Camden counties still have some Sears Roebuck homes standing strong! Do you have a Sears Modern Home? Do you want to learn more about these DIY homesteads that still dot the United States-some in your community?

The Delran Historical Society invites all to come and hear the Sears Roebuck Modern Homes Story and learn about the ground-breaking Do-It-Yourself program that found thousands of Americans buying their home from the Sears Roebuck catalog, having it delivered by railroad and then dropped on their vacant lot plot to begin the build!

Speaker Judy Gauntt will deliver an oral history of the Sears Modern Home Program and explain how to point out all the characteristics of a Sears Roebuck Home.

THANK YOU ALL for supporting this year’s Delran Historical Society Annual HOAGIE Sale!!
